There is no free trial.
There is a 30-day exit.
NordVPN offers a three-day trial on exactly one platform, and a money-back guarantee on all of them. The two are not interchangeable, and the difference changes what you have to do.
If you are on Windows, macOS or iOS, there is no free trial at all. You subscribe, test for up to 30 days, and then ask for a refund. The refund is a request, not an automatic exit — if you forget to make it, you have bought a subscription.
"Free trial" is the most-searched phrase in this category and the least accurately used. What most providers offer is a money-back guarantee: you pay in full, you get a window, and you have to actively claim your money back inside it. That is a legitimate and useful arrangement. It is also not a trial, and treating it as one is how people end up paying for something they meant to test.
| Platform | Free trial | Money-back window | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Android | 3 days | 30 days | The only genuine trial we could confirm |
| iOS | None | 30 days | Buy direct — App Store purchases sit outside the standard path |
| Windows | None | 30 days | Full application, no time limit on features |
| macOS | None | 30 days | As above |
| Via app store | None | Different path | Purchases are handled by the platform, not the provider |
Three days is barely enough to install the client, connect once and decide whether the interface annoys you. It is not enough to judge speed on your own line, or whether a streaming service holds up on a Tuesday evening. So even where a trial exists, the thirty-day window is the more useful instrument — provided you treat it as one.
Why the difference matters
A trial expires. A guarantee has to be invoked. One of those happens to you, the other has to be done by you — and the second requires remembering a date that no confirmation email will remind you about.
There is also a pricing angle. The monthly plan is the only term short enough to function as a trial, and it is the most expensive rate on the page by a wide margin. Buying monthly to "test" costs far more than buying a two-year plan and asking for the refund inside thirty days, provided you actually ask.

Using the window properly
The sequence matters more than the length. Do the awkward tests first, because the things you cannot change later are the things worth checking early.
Buy direct,
not in-app
A purchase through an app store is handled by that store, and its refund rules replace the provider's. Buy on the provider's own site if you intend to use the window.
Put the deadline
in a calendar
Thirty days from the charge, not from the installation. Set the reminder for day 27 so a weekend does not eat the margin.
Test the things
you cannot fix
Your line speed, the streaming services you actually use, the devices you actually own. Interface complaints are survivable; a service that will not unblock your platform is not.
Ask, in writing,
before the date
A refund request is a support conversation, usually by live chat. Keep the transcript. "It expired yesterday" is the one argument that reliably fails.
A money-back guarantee is not a trial that ends by itself. It is a window you have to use, on a date you have to remember, in a channel you have to open.
None of this is a criticism of the arrangement. A 30-day guarantee is genuinely more generous than a 7-day trial, and it covers the whole product rather than a restricted slice of it. It simply requires you to treat it as what it is: a return policy with a deadline, not a free month.
